What is PUR binding
PUR binding is a form of perfect binding where trimmed pages are glued at the spine using polyurethane reactive adhesive. The cover wraps around the glued spine, creating a clean rectangular book with a printed spine.
PUR adhesive is significantly stronger than standard EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) glue used in traditional perfect binding. It is also heat-resistant, which means PUR-bound books do not soften or crack in warm environments. Once cured, the bond is permanent.
When to use PUR binding
PUR binding suits medium to large runs of publications thicker than about 5mm at the spine. Common applications include catalogues, annual reports, property schedules, training manuals, product guides and paperback-format books.
It is the standard choice when you need a professional rectangular spine at a lower cost than case binding. PUR handles coated and uncoated stocks equally well, and the flexible spine resists cracking even on heavy paper weights.
Setup costs are moderate. Unit costs drop efficiently at higher quantities, making PUR the most cost-effective method for runs above 50 to 100 copies.
PUR versus EVA perfect binding
Traditional perfect binding uses EVA hot-melt glue. EVA is cheaper but weaker. Pages can pull away from an EVA spine over time, particularly on coated stocks where the glue struggles to grip the smooth surface.
PUR adhesive chemically bonds to the paper fibres as it cures. This creates a stronger, more flexible join that resists page pull-out. We use PUR exclusively and do not offer EVA binding, because the quality difference does not justify the small cost saving.
Design considerations
The spine needs to be at least 3mm to 5mm thick for the glue to hold reliably. Allow a minimum 5mm inner margin so text is not lost in the binding.
The cover wraps around the spine and is trimmed flush on three sides. Spine text is readable on books thicker than about 6mm. Cover images can bleed to all edges.
PUR-bound books do not open fully flat. If you need seamless double-page spreads, consider layflat binding or section sewn binding instead.
How we produce PUR binding
Sheets are printed, collated and trimmed to create the text block. The spine edge is milled to create a rough surface for maximum glue adhesion. PUR adhesive is applied, and the cover is scored, wrapped and pressed onto the spine. The finished books are trimmed on three sides.
Curing takes approximately 24 hours. We schedule PUR jobs to allow full cure time before dispatch, so the binding reaches full strength before it leaves the building.

Yes. The cover is laminated before binding. Matt, gloss, soft-touch and anti-scuff laminates are all compatible with PUR binding.
