Section Sewn Binding
Section sewn binding stitches folded signatures together before they are glued into the cover. It is the strongest binding method for books that need to open flat and withstand repeated use. We produce section sewn books in-house at our Marrickville bindery.
What is section sewn binding
A section sewn book starts with printed sheets folded into signatures, typically 8, 12 or 16 pages per section. Each signature is sewn individually, then the sewn signatures are glued together at the spine.
The sewn construction distributes stress across multiple thread points rather than relying on glue alone. This makes section sewing significantly stronger than PUR or perfect binding. Books produced this way open fully flat without cracking the spine or loosening pages.
When to use section sewn binding
Section sewing suits projects where the book will be handled repeatedly, displayed open, or kept as a reference piece. Common applications include brand books, coffee table publications, property sales books, annual reports for prestige clients, and exhibition catalogues.
It is frequently combined with case binding to create the most durable and premium result. Section sewing can also be used with a soft wrap cover for a lighter feel at a lower cost point.
How section sewing compares to other methods
PUR binding glues the trimmed spine of individual pages. It is strong but relies entirely on adhesive. Section sewing adds mechanical thread reinforcement, making it more resilient over time.
Saddle stitching folds and staples the entire book at once. It handles thin publications but cannot match the flat-opening behaviour or durability of section sewing.
Over sewn binding stitches through a pad-glued spine for visible thread detail. It is primarily an aesthetic technique. Section sewing is a structural one.
Design considerations
Page counts need to divide into even signatures. A 16-page signature is standard, but 8 and 12-page signatures are also common. Odd page counts are accommodated by adding a short signature or a tip-in.
Allow a minimum 15mm inner margin for comfortable reading. Images that cross the spine will appear seamless because the sewn construction allows the book to open flat.
Section sewn books accept all cover treatments: case binding with cloth or printed board, soft wrap covers, foiling, embossing and debossing on the cover boards.
How we produce section sewn books
Sheets are printed on our HP Indigo presses, folded into signatures, collated in order and sewn on a section sewing machine. The sewn text block is spine-glued and trimmed on three sides.
For case-bound books, we make the covers in-house using board, cloth or printed wrap, then case the text block into the finished cover. The entire process happens on one production floor.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum number of pages for section sewn binding?
Section sewing requires at least two signatures, so a minimum of 16 to 24 pages depending on the signature configuration.
Is section sewn binding more expensive than PUR?
Yes. The sewing process takes longer and setup costs are higher. The trade-off is significantly greater durability and a flat-opening spine. For books that need to last, it is worth the investment.
Can section sewn books have a soft cover?
Yes. The sewn text block can be finished with either a hard case cover or a soft wrap cover. Soft covers reduce cost while retaining the structural benefits of sewn binding.
How long does section sewn binding take?
Allow 2 to 3 additional production days compared to PUR binding, depending on page count and run size.
Can I see a sample before committing?
Yes. We produce dummy books and binding samples so you can assess the weight, feel and opening behaviour before approving the full run.
