What is wiro binding
Wiro binding, also called twin-loop or wire-o binding, uses a pre-formed double-loop wire that is crimped through rectangular holes punched along the spine edge. The wire loops allow each page to turn independently and lay completely flat.
Standard wire pitches are 2:1 (two holes per inch) for thicker documents and 3:1 (three holes per inch) for thinner publications. Wire is available in silver, black, white and antique copper as standard, with other colours sourced on request.
When to use wiro binding
Wiro binding suits any document that needs to stay open hands-free. Common applications include training manuals, reference guides, recipe books, presentation decks, sample books and desk calendars.
It handles a wide range of thicknesses, from a few pages up to about 25mm of spine capacity. Pages, dividers, pockets and fold-out sections can all be bound into the same document. This flexibility makes wiro popular for material libraries and specification books.
Setup costs are low and turnaround is fast. Wiro is one of the most affordable binding methods for short and medium runs.
Canadian wiro binding
Canadian wiro wraps a hard cover around the wire, concealing it from the outside. The result looks like a case-bound book but retains the flat-opening behaviour of wiro binding.
Half-Canadian binding covers only the spine and part of the front and back boards. Full Canadian covers the entire wire. Both options elevate the perceived quality of a wiro-bound document without the cost of traditional case binding.
Design considerations
Allow a 10mm to 15mm margin on the binding edge for the punch holes. Content can print right up to the holes, but text should not cross into the punched area.
Pages rotate fully, so the back cover can fold behind the front. This is useful for documents used in meetings or presentations. Tab dividers, pocket pages and heavier board stock can be mixed in without affecting the wire closure.
Wire colour selection is a simple way to match the binding to the cover design. Antique copper wire paired with a kraft or uncoated cover creates a distinctive, tactile result.
Alternatives to wiro binding
For a flat spine and printed spine text, PUR binding provides a more formal appearance. For documents that need to lay flat with seamless double-page images, layflat binding removes the gutter entirely.
How we produce wiro binding
Pages are printed, collated and punched on our production floor. The wire is inserted and crimped in a single pass. Cover boards, tab dividers and other inserts are punched and bound in the same operation.
The process is fast and handles mixed stock weights in a single bind. For Canadian wiro, the cover wrap is assembled and attached after the wire is crimped.
